Peppol eInvoicing in Sweden

A key proponent of Peppol for over 14 years, Sweden has been directly involved in the network’s expansion — beyond an EU-funded project into the global network it is today. With Peppol eInvoicing firmly embedded in the public sector, the next step is widespread B2B adoption, which is being led by a group of Sweden’s top governmental bodies. In the context of the European Union’s VAT in the Digital Age (ViDA) initiative, 2023 is the year that the Swedish Government is considering mandating B2G and B2B eInvoicing nationally.

One connection allows you to efficiently and securely exchange eDocuments with verified local and international B2G and B2B partners. Tickstar handles setup and maintenance, while you enjoy the benefits.

Cost savings –

In 2019, Sweden’s law on eInvoicing was projected by authorities to save 1,7 billion SEK per year. As well as being effective in combatting under- or unreported VAT, this large savings comes from the cost of processing the invoices themselves. According to calculations released by Australia’s Peppol Authority, entities can realise cost savings of up to 66% — a cost of AUD 9,18 (SEK 65,62) to process an eInvoice, as opposed to AUD 27,67 (SEK 197,80) for a PDF invoice sent through email.

Faster invoice payout –

Peppol’s direct secure connection without middlemen allows for faster receival and even the automation of payments, without any of the errors that can come from manual entry of information.

Compliance with EU regulations –

Peppol was built to European specifications and complies with directive 2014/55/EU on eInvoicing in public procurement. In addition, Tickstar is at the forefront of all developments, assuring compliance is ongoing in the face of changing regulations.

User-friendly interface and advanced tools –

Refined over 11 years by Tickstar’s Peppol pioneers, we offer expert tools that eclipse those offered by our competitors. This includes our Peppol Validator, Participant Lookup API and Service Metadata Publisher (SMP), designed to ensure you get the most out of your eInvoicing experience within your own applications!

Direct connection to ERP systems –

If you’re a larger government agency or enterprise, Tickstar’s API connection allows Peppol to be built into your ERP systems. For software vendors, Peppol can be provided as part of your customised software packages to businesses around the world — opening another revenue stream with ease.

The Peppol standard is the world standard –

Sweden has adopted Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 for transactions, which is not only compliant with European regulations, but allows for the transfer of electronic documents to any other Peppol participant in the world—through just one connection!

eInvoicing in Sweden

The Swedish Government was already putting eInvoicing regulations into place in 2008, and had joined Peppol in 2009, when the network was still just an experimental project funded by the European Union. The country has been a key player ever since, with a coordinated focus from the country’s main institutions to expand adoption into the B2B arena.

2022 brought the initiation of a study into digitalising VAT processes, while 2023 has seen a coordinated approach from The Agency of Digital Government (DIGG—Sweden’s Peppol Authority), the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket), and the Tax Agency (Skatteverket), who have submitted a formal request to the Swedish government to investigate the conditions for adopting mandatory eInvoicing across both B2B and B2G sectors.

While the benefits of increased document security and greater tax collection are definitely benefits, the country’s wider goal is to make Sweden a more open and efficient economy, where public and private sector businesses can effectively conduct cross-border trade. Peppol facilitates this for entities of all sizes, and especially for smaller companies, helps them overcome both technical and cost barriers that put them at a disadvantage when competing with larger operations.

As far as the statistics are concerned, Sweden is definitely succeeding in encouraging Peppol adoption, with its 80.000+ participants to date placing it second in the world (after Norway). 21.000+ of these have been added in the last year alone, making Sweden also one of the countries with the highest relative growth in Peppol participants.

These participants are only seeing greater benefits as the network continues its steady growth and in existing European countries, and world markets, notably in the Asia-Pacific region, where Peppol authorities have been established in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and soon Malaysia. This means if you’re thinking of adopting Peppol for your business, now is the perfect time.
